The Lyrics of 'Get Up!' - Bonus track with Fi Channon

How Get Up! turned into a vocal track too

The bonus track on the album features the vocal talents of Fi Channon. I've known Fi for years through band events and always loved her voice. When I decided I needed some vocals on An Angel In Stilettos it was a no-brainer - she was the perfect choice. I sneakily sent her some tracks I was working on for her opinion (without telling her my evil plan to enlist her services) and fortunately she liked them. Originally, the plan was just for her to provide the voice of the Angel on An Angel In Stilettos. However, I was so blown away by her performance on that track that I just had to work out a full song for her to feature on.

The instrumental version of Get Up! had already been completed and turned out to be the perfect candidate. I'd written it with a story in mind of a person struggling to motivate themselves to get on with life, rather than dwelling on the past and thinking about decisions they could have made differently, people that let them down and so on (basically, the things most humans do!). The voice they're hearing telling them to 'get up' is an inner voice - maybe their spirit. I sent the track over to Fi to check out. I had no idea if it would work with vocals (hey, I'm a guitarist, right? What do I know about writing a vocal track?!) but, to my relief, she said she could hear that a vocal would fit it. We jumped on a Zoom call, had a natter and together came up with the lyrics. Fi turned this into a hauntingly beautiful vocal track that fit it just great. Anyway, enough of my jibber-jabber.

Here are the lyrics if you fancy checking them out, and go look up Fi if you need an amazing vocalist for anything (reverbnation.com/fichannon

Get Up! Lyrics by Fi Channon and Sukh Ryatt. (c) ZenRigs Music 2021

How did it all go so wrong
When you played the game with grace
Others laughed so easily
Their lives fell into place
You think your chance has passed you by
That life’s an endless fight
Really, it’s a dream we share
A story you can write

Your heart’s breaking, for a life you didn’t find
The choices that you had to make
are carved into your mind
But nothing lasts forever,
Your pain can set you free
Look inside, and realise,
You’re where you’re meant to be

Now Get up! Get up! Get up!

The chains of life that hold you down
Aren’t keepers of your fate
The power to break free from them
Was always yours to take
Close your eyes, trust your soul
Set your spirit free
I’ll take you to a higher place
You just have to believe

Your dream’s not over
it’s only just begun
There’s a light inside you, that’s brighter than the sun
Close your eyes, and I’ll be there, the whisper in your dreams
Together we can find a way
To the life you want to lead… now

Get up! Get up! Get up!

Your dream’s not over,
it’s only just begun
There’s a light inside you, that’s brighter than the sun
Forever here beside you
I’ll guide you all the way
Your life, you’ll come to realise
Was always yours to shape

On a cold day in December 2012, I got to spend the day with Thomas Nordegg and Steve Vai. It was a hell of a day, and one that I'll remember until the proverbial bucket is kicked. I went home that night and wrote everything down to make sure I'd not forget, and am sharing that story with you here, including lots of back-stage pictures and side-stage gig footage, in this epic post. It's long, but I wanted to get it down in one go rather than serialise it, as it's all very interconnected. NOTE : This story was written waaaaay back in 2012, and things have changed since then. Steve ended up the using my solid ZenRigs magnetic glow-in-the-dark labelling system, 'KickTags' on his Fractal Audio MFC-101 and took then all over the world until the Axe-FX III replaced his old Axe-FX II based rig. This story is about my early 'hobby' version of the labels and how I got to know Steve and Thomas because of them . To this day, Thomas and Steve still use things I've made and I still look forward to meeting up every time they swing by the UK . I hope you enjoy the read! Onto the story...
